Description
A compact, rounded or cushion-shaped Acropora made of short, crowded branchlets. Each branchlet is covered in neat, scale-like side cups. Colonies are often green, orange, pink, cream or brown and grow on reef flats and shallow slopes. It is a common species across the Indo-Pacific and much studied by coral scientists.
In the Maldives
Recorded from the Maldives: museum specimens (n=10, QM); iNaturalist research-grade observations in the Maldives (n=5); literature records via OBIS (Hexacorallians of the World (Fautin 2013)). Branching and table corals of this kind were among the worst hit by the 1998 and 2016 mass bleaching events in the Maldives.
