Description
A slender shrimp goby, white with five pinkish-red bars, a red diagonal band across the cheek and a yellow tail marked with red spots. It shares a burrow in sand and rubble with a snapping shrimp: the nearly blind shrimp keeps the burrow dug out while the goby keeps watch, and the shrimp keeps an antenna on the goby so it knows when to retreat. It lives on clear reefs, mostly at 5 to 35 m.
In the Maldives
Dhivehi name dingaa funna (MRS 1997). MRS describes how the goby keeps its tail in contact with its shrimp partner.

Dhivehi name source: M.R.S. (1997) Fishes of the Maldives (FAO/BOBP MAG/21) gives 'Dingaa funna' (Latin form). FishBase (country: Maldives) gives only the general group name 'Funna'. Thaana from the Dhivehi Wikipedia article 'ޑިނގާ ފުންނަ' (derived from the MRS 1997 Dhivehi edition); it matches the Latin form. FLAG: the source states no traditional name was recorded and this descriptive name was coined for the book; it is not an established fishermen's name.
