Description
A stocky anemonefish, usually dark brown to black with two or three white bars and an orange-yellow snout, belly and fins; colour varies a lot across its range and with the host anemone. It lives among the stinging tentacles of sea anemones, protected by a mucus coat, and defends the anemone in return. All anemonefish are born male; the largest fish in a group becomes the breeding female. Eggs are laid on bare rock beside the anemone and guarded by the male.
In the Maldives
One of two anemonefish commonly seen in the Maldives (with the Maldive anemonefish). It uses a wide range of host anemone species.
