Description

A long, thin fish with a tubular snout, a row of separate spines along the back and a small rounded tail with dark spots. It comes in brown, mottled green and bright yellow colour forms. It stalks small fish and shrimps by drifting head-down among corals or shadowing larger fish such as groupers and parrotfish, then sucks prey in with a sudden strike.

In the Maldives

Dhivehi name reedhoo tholhi (MRS 1997). Frequently seen on Maldivian reefs, including the bright yellow form.
