Description

A small grouper, reddish brown at the front and dark brown towards the rear, with two pale bands on the tail that converge towards its edge. It lives singly in shallow, healthy coral areas of lagoons and outer reefs and feeds mostly on small fish. Because it depends on live coral, it declines quickly when reefs are degraded.

In the Maldives

FishBase uses this name for the Pacific population; in the Maldives the similar Indian Ocean darkfin hind is usually treated as C. nigripinnis. Dhivehi Wikipedia (MRS-derived) gives kanfaiy kalhu faana, the same name as C. nigripinnis.
