Description
A small, blunt-headed parrotfish. Females are dark brown to grey, often with a pale tail base bearing a dark spot or rows of pale spots; males are green and blue with a large yellowish to tan patch on the cheek or tail base. It feeds in groups on algae growing on dead coral and pavement, biting off chunks of limestone that it grinds and excretes as fine sand.
