A very long, thin fish with a tubular snout and a long whip-like filament from the middle of the tail. It is greenish to brownish grey above and silvery below with two blue stripes or rows of blue spots along the back, and turns banded at night. It hunts small fish and shrimps, often swimming alongside other fish to approach prey.
In the Maldives

Dhivehi name source: M.R.S. (1997) Fishes of the Maldives (FAO/BOBP MAG/21) gives 'Onugandu tholhi' (Latin form). FishBase (country: Maldives) agrees: 'Onugandu tholhi'. Thaana from the Dhivehi Wikipedia article 'އޮނުގަނޑުތޮޅި' (derived from the MRS 1997 Dhivehi edition); it matches the Latin form.
