Description
A massive or encrusting coral with cups set in angular, sharply walled depressions, so the surface looks like a pattern of small pits. Colonies are usually brown, yellowish or greenish and grow on reef slopes. It is named after the zoologist J. Stanley Gardiner, who studied Maldivian reefs in 1899 to 1900.
